Mom’s Needlework
I’ve mentioned many times before that my Mom and other female relatives were very influential on my early development as a textile artist. Both grandmothers sewed – and one quilted and tatted, the other knitted and did cross stitch – and my Mom was a fine dressmaker and accomplished needleworker, particularly enjoying crewel and embroidery. All of them patiently taught me their skills as I was growing up, and encouraged me to put my own twist on things.
On a recent visit home, I noticed that there are still many of Mom’s needlework pieces on the walls throughout the house. Here are some (mainly detail) images of them, roughly in chronological order (I think). Unfortunately, they are all behind glass so the images aren’t as sharp as I would have liked.

These are wonderful! My mother was prolific knitter and she also made painted reproduction biaque dolls and dressed them in fabulous outfits.

Gerrie, do you have any of your Mom’s dolls? I’m hoping I won’t have to fight my siblings for my favorite pieces of Mom’s once she decides to let them go to new homes!
